Making these...
Tools are meant to make our job easier, faster, and more efficient. I think that acquisition is an exciting part of starting a new adventure! But it can have its drawbacks too.
Pictured above are my rotary cutters, and quilting ruler. I use them for cutting tees into tee shirt yarn, or "tarn."
Before using these, I used scissors to cut the fabric into long strips. Sure, it is doable, but if you are making a bunch, or have arthritis, this can cause hand cramping and soreness.
New tools come with a learning curves, this was not a steep curve at all. Watch your fingers, lock the blade when not in use. I love the clear ruler to see where the width measurement is, aligned with the cuts. Using a self healing mat saves the blade and cutting surface!
This is an instance when simple tools are good tools! I have an electric rotary cutter. The reason that I tried this electric machine is for large quantities and the potential for cutting denim. Personally, I prefer the manual version for control and safety on simple tees. I already had an injury using it the first week, but will keep it for the heavier fabrics, later.... With extreme care!
Why do I make tee yarn?
As a weaver, knitter, and fiber enthusiast, and having environmental concerns, I love materials that are readily available and often ending up in the landfill.
I collect from thrift shops, friends and the community. Buy nothing groups are a great way to seek or share materials that work be thrown away.
The labor of cutting the "tarn" is rewarding and relaxing in my opinion. I cut and wind them into balls, and store them until I have the colors and quantity for a project. Projects can be trivets coasters, mats and rugs.
The Weaving Way will be hosting my online workshop for creating this material, and weaving a potholder using it!
I hope that you can join me on this adventure in weaving!
